Cast Stone Heads

Heads placed above windows and doors provide an attractive accent to a finished masonry wall. Whether they are placed in brick, render or even stone walls the decorative head (non-structural) improves the otherwise plain wall.

There four standard profiles, each with a number of different section sizes based on brick courses and wall depths.

These are: Plain, Chamfered, Splayed or splayed with applied keystone.

Standard Head Designs

There are three popular options when choosing a design of decorative non-structural head. These are:

Plain (rectangular)

Chamfered (rectangular, with a chamfer to match the opening)

Splayed (tapered ends, underside matching the opening)

There is the option to further enhance the head by providing an applied keystone

PH - Plain Head
PHK - Plain Head with Keystone
CH - Chamfered Head
SH - Splayed Head
SHK - Splayed Head with Keystone
AP - Applied Keystone

Choosing the right Head for you..

We would always recommend contacting us when choosing the right head design for your project.

However, below is some general guidance:

It is important to remember that semi-dry cast stone is non-load bearing. Therefore, a cast stone head must be laid upon a steel lintol.

Galvanised steel rebar is cast with-in the cast stone units for handling purposes – more information is contained our technical sections.

When specifying cast stone heads, we will describe them first by section size, i.e. 215mm x 100mm and then by window/door opening or underside, followed by overall size. See below

Applied Keystones

Applied Keystones give the desirable look of the protruding feature, as a centre-point to the decorative head. Its simple to install, as it hooks over the head. Best of all it can cover centre joints, heads made in two parts.

The standard moulding is suitable for 215mm high (3brick courses) and is 290mm high in total.

Bay window heads

A selection of head kits for 45, 60 and 90 degree bays are available.

The length of components are based on external brick/block dimensions, sketches can be provided for signed confirmation.

We can talk through the process and guide you to the right type.
